today's 20x200 photograph is very happy birthday america so i'm gonna go ahead and feature colin blakely, an artist prone to wordy titling. these pictures are from a collection called the histories beneath. i love how these bare walls look- gutted, exposed.
bay area artist shaun o'dell was introduced to me by my friend mr. regular fit. you might know him from the underground dj circuit in sf. he spins a lot of house, is 7 feet tall with red hair & green eyes and puts on a fantastic show. here are some of my o'dell favorites.
i spent last friday night in andersonville ... we ordered pizza from great lake (phenomenal) and we picked up some wine from in fine spirits. on the walls we saw justus roe - in fact the top image is what caught my eye initially. but perhaps even better than the paintings themselves are their titles. my favorites include cartoon candyland, urban tumbleweed, gentriphied, and of course, ice crunk.
a friend introduced me to jason karolak who's in a new exhibit called paper love. you can check it out at devening projects & editions june 29 - aug 8. as the days go on i'm sure you'll see me covering some of the artists from the show. these images remind me of ellsworth kelly. karolak also does some cool b & w line drawings- and coincidentally he may or may not be obsessed with tornados.
san francisco artist (and mythbusters girl friday) kari byron makes these sweet but slightly dilapidated-looking marionette-type sculptures. totally rad.
